#23: Create winter care packages for those in need

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

It’s the dead of winter here in Toronto and I can’t say that I’m thrilled about walking outside and feeling my nose hairs freeze beneath my nostrils.  Nor am I too keen on bundling up from head to toe like a human marshmallow anytime I plan on being outside for more than 10 minutes. Let’s not even start with the shoveling of snow on my driveway or the scraping off of ice on my car at 7am in the morning!  Admittedly, watching the snow flakes fall outside my window while I sip on some hot cocoa by the heater, is more of my style. 😉 That being said, many people unfortunately don’t have this luxury and risk freezing during these dangerously cold winter months.

Winter care packages are a great way to help people who lack adequate winter clothing, and are a creative way to give back to those in need.  A care package may consist of a gift bag filled with a few essential winter items such as a hat, gloves and socks. These bags can then be donated to local charities, shelters or even low-income schools.  Warm socks, gloves, hats, boots, sweaters, scarves and the like can be found in many thrift stores or even dollar stores for relatively low prices.  Many families also have old winter clothes that are left sitting in their closet from year to year, which can also be added to these care packages.

Kudos to my friend PC who inspired me with this idea.  At the start of winter, she picked up a dozen pairs of gloves and hats and created lovely care packages to hand out to a local shelter.  I have no doubt her gesture brought a warm smile to many faces and somewhere in Toronto, there is probably a child wearing the very gloves and hat that she bought, happily making snow-angels in the snow.  🙂 Thank-you for helping the world!
